Before we talk about how to focus, it’s important to talk about why some people struggle to concentrate. While many of us lead busy lives and try to multitask on a regular basis, it’s no surprise that some of us cannot focus on a task.

It’s safe to say that having a lack of focus now and then is entirely normal but what about all the time? If you consistently find it difficult to concentrate every day, your work and your personal life could suffer.

So, what’s going on in your brain? Sometimes it’s not a significant issue and other times chronic lack of focus is something more serious. Here are some common reasons why some people can’t concentrate.

While people with specific health conditions experience a variety of symptoms, the poor focus may be a symptom of health conditions like attention deficit disorder (ADHD), alcoholism, Cushing disease, dementia, depression, insomnia, or chronic fatigue syndrome.


Some prescription medications can affect one’s ability to concentrate. Even if it’s not listed as a possible side effect, talk with your doctor or pharmacist to see if your difficulty with focusing could be related to a medication.

Much of the so-called “brain food” may already be a part of your daily diet but if not, but if not, enriching your diet with superfoods can improve your overall brain health, especially your ability to concentrate.

We hear about superfoods a lot, but what are they? A superfood is best described as a “nutritionally dense food.” While most foods offer sufficient nutrition, concentration superfoods provide more than just the essential nutrients. Superfoods aren’t a specific food group, but they are typically plant-based; although some fish and dairy are considered to be concentration superfoods.

While some people avoid avocados because they are a high-fat food, it’s important to remember that avocados have “good” fat and it also contains about 25 percent of Vitamin K. Vitamin K plays an essential role in memory and overall brain health.

Research reveals that eating blueberries may help improve short-term memory loss, which can be a symptom of one’s inability to concentrate. The gallic acid in the berries also helps to protect our brains from the negative effects of too much stress.

While blueberries are one of the “must have” superfoods, consider dark red or purple fruits and vegetables (if blueberries are out of season) as they can have similar benefits.

Dark Chocolate

Most of us, who have a sweet tooth, know that eating too much sugar can be bad for our health. Dark chocolate is a great alternative for people who want a sweet treat and reap some of the health benefits, which include improving cognitive function.

Healthy Oils

While oil often has a bad reputation for clogging arteries and resulting in other health issues, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, and even avocado oil are brain-friendly.

Bone Broth

Bone broth has a number of health benefits, and it can also help improve your ability to concentrate. While you can purchase bone broth at your local grocery store, it’s easy enough to make your own bone broth. Use the broth in a homemade soup or drink it as is to reap the brain-healthy benefits.

Squash and Sweet Potatoes

Orange foods like squash and sweet potatoes are nutrient-rich and may provide benefits to your brain such as preventing nerve damage, brain shrinkage and helping to enhance memory. Look for other orange superfoods that are packed with Vitamin B12 and folic acid.

Some Omega-3 Foods

Some foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce the symptoms of ADHD and other cognitive issues. Salmon is a great example of one of the superfoods for concentration as are eggs and walnuts. Don’t like salmon, consider trout, mackerel, or sardines.

Whole Grains

Starting your morning with whole grains can keep your brain energized throughout the day, and you may be able to concentrate better, too. Try oatmeal in the morning or brown rice and quinoa for a hearty, brain-healthy dish later in the day.


If you like beets, you might be happy to hear that it’s another superfood that can help boost your energy and blood flow to the brain, thanks to the nitrates in the beets. Try roasting the beets or put them in a salad if you’re not the biggest fan of beets.

Broccoli and Leafy Greens

If you want to improve your focus and stay on task, eating a big bowl of leafy greens or some broccoli may help you concentrate. Rich in Vitamin K, green vegetables like kale, mustard greens, and collard greens can help your memory stay sharp.

Already eating all the superfoods on our list and your doctor gave you a clean bill of health, and you’re still having problems concentrating? Remember, almost everyone has a hard time concentrating from time to time so don’t get too concerned if it happens once in a while.

While there are many things you can try to help you concentrate a little better, it’s also important to keep in mind that everyone is different; you may need to try a few things before you find it easier to concentrate.

What’s On Your Mind?

If your brain feels congested with thoughts and you can’t seem to focus on one thing, it may be time to do a little journaling or even write a to-do list.
